My wife and I just returned from a little road trip/railroad trip. While most of the traveling was by car, we visited a major railroad yard and took a short trip on Amtrak. We had the good fortune to get a VIP tour of BNSF’s Galesburg Hump Yard at Galesburg Railroad Days. The 3-hour walking tour included a walk-through of the diesel shop and a visit to the control tower. It was tough not to salivate. The model railroad and toy show was the largest show I’ve experienced. Too many vendors to count. Another highlight was walking through one of BNSF’s most modern diesel locomotives, an ES44C4 a/k/a a C4 Gevo.
Next stop, Dwight Illinois. After a good night’s sleep, we boarded an Amtrak with my son, daughter-in-law, and 3 grandchildren for a 90-minute ride to Chicago, where we enjoyed some shopping, a visit to Millenneum Park, the Navy Peer, and some great Giardono’s pizza.
Meet me in St. Louis. A visit to the downtown public library, Shaw’s garden, Ball Park Village and a Cardinal’s baseball game were the highlights of our visit. There was also a little side trip to Ted Drew’s Frozen Custard. We stayed at the Drury Inn across the street from Union Station. I highly recommend them!
Here are some of the photos we captured along the way..
